Luss at a glance
Luss lies on the west shore of Loch Lomond. Stone cottages line the village streets, and the beach and the pier are the two places most visitors head for. Several boat trips start from the pier, so the village works as a stop on the water as well as on the road.
Parking is the first thing to plan. The council car park charges by the hour, a second car park in the village is private, and the amounts changed in June 2026. The details are in the parking section below.

How to get to Luss
By road, by train and bus, or across the water. Whichever you choose, check the current timetable before you leave.
By car
Luss is on the west side of the loch and is reached by the A82. Plan your parking in advance, because the main car park is pay and display and the second one is private.
By train and bus
Take the direct train from Glasgow Queen Street to Balloch, which takes about 50 minutes on average. From Balloch, bus 305 runs to Luss. Our Balloch page has the train details.
By boat from Balloch
A ferry runs between Balloch and Luss from May to September. It leaves Balloch at 12:30 and 15:00 and leaves Luss at 13:30 and 16:00. Fares are in the boat table below.
On a day tour
One day tour from Edinburgh lists only a short stop in Luss on a longer route through the West Highlands. If Luss is your main goal, travel on your own or pick a loch cruise instead.

Parking in Luss
Charges at the council car park for 2026/27. They rose in June 2026, when the hourly rate went from about £1 to £1.20.
| Stay | Council car park, 2026/27 |
|---|---|
| Up to 15 minutes | £0.35 |
| Up to 30 minutes | £0.60 |
| Up to 45 minutes | £0.90 |
| Up to 60 minutes | £1.20 |
| Longer stays | £1.20 per hour, tariff table up to 10 hours |
The council car park is called Old Toll House and has 250 spaces. Pay and display applies from 09:00 to 18:00, Monday to Sunday. Luss South is a separate car park run by Luss Estates, and its charges are set by the owner, so do not assume the council rates apply there. Paying for parking does not reserve a space, which matters on busy days.
Motorhomes: a car park that is big enough for your vehicle is not a permission to sleep in it. The Luss car park is not marked as motorhome parking. If you plan to camp, read the permit rules on our where to stay page.
Boats from the pier at Luss
Two operators run trips from Luss. Fares are adult prices for 2026. The Luss Circular and the Island Explorer run on Cruise Loch Lomond, the other two on Sweeney's Cruise Co.
| Trip | Season | Departures from Luss | Adult |

| Island Explorer to Inchcailloch, 35 minutes outward | Daily 27 March to 1 November 2026 | 10:00, 11:30, 13:15 (island returns 12:05, 13:50, 15:20) | £20 return |
| Balloch and Luss ferry | May to September | 13:30, 16:00 (from Balloch 12:30, 15:00) | £20 single, about £29 return |

Children under 5 travel free on both operators' trips but need a booking. On the Balloch and Luss ferry the 13 to 15 fare is £18.50 single or £25 return, and children up to 12 pay £14.50 or £19. Bikes cost £2 each way on that ferry. For the Luss Circular, the 2026 timetable lists a child fare of £13 and a family fare of £60 for two adults and two children, so check the fare when you book. Cruise Loch Lomond takes £1 off the adult fare from age 60 or with a student card, and dogs travel free. More routes are on our boat trips page.
The Island Explorer leads to Inchcailloch, an island with woodland paths. Boats from Balmaha also reach it, which our Inchcailloch page covers.

The beach, the pier and the water
The beach and the pier are the heart of Luss. Pier Road leads down to the water between small houses. A beach is not the same as a supervised bathing spot, so plan as if no lifeguard is on duty.
- The water is cold and the bed can drop away suddenly near the shore. Cold shock and hypothermia are real risks.
- Do not swim alone, get in slowly and stay visible.
- A sandy shore says nothing about water quality. Local signs and warnings come first.
Midges: they are usually active from May to October, with the strongest activity in high summer. They are worst in the morning and evening, in still, damp air and near woodland. Bring repellent, wear long sleeves and trousers, and take a head net if you are sensitive.

Luss: frequently asked questions
How much does parking in Luss cost?
The council car park at the Old Toll House charges £0.35 for 15 minutes, £0.60 for 30 minutes, £0.90 for 45 minutes and £1.20 for an hour, then £1.20 per hour (2026/27 tariff). Pay and display applies from 09:00 to 18:00, Monday to Sunday. Luss South is a private car park with its own charges.
Is there a boat from Luss to Balloch?
Yes. The Balloch and Luss ferry runs from May to September and leaves Luss at 13:30 and 16:00. The adult single fare is £20 (2026).
Can I get to Luss without a car?
Yes. Take the train from Glasgow Queen Street to Balloch, then bus 305 to Luss, or the ferry from Balloch in season. Check the current timetables before you go.
Can I sleep in a motorhome in the Luss car park?
No. The council states that a car park large enough for your vehicle is not a permission to stay overnight in it, and the Luss car park is not marked as motorhome parking.
Can I swim at the beach in Luss?
Take care. The loch is cold, the bed drops away quickly near the shore and nothing guarantees the water quality. Do not swim alone, get in slowly and follow local signs.
Which boat trip goes to an island from Luss?
The Island Explorer sails from Luss to Inchcailloch. The outward trip takes 35 minutes and the adult return fare is £20 in 2026. It runs daily from 27 March to 1 November 2026.
